As we prepare to embark on a study of 2 Samuel, it is helpful to review the main themes and figures of 1 Samuel. The book recounts Israel’s transition from the period of the judges to a monarchy as the heavenly King established the line of the Davidic king in anticipation of the Messianic King. Through the lives of three main leaders (Samuel, Saul, and David) God displayed His sovereign initiative, righteous judgment, and saving grace in keeping with His covenant promises. Throughout the book, He shows us our need for the ultimate King who alone can save and defend us, Jesus Christ.
