Before the Lord describes the destruction that is coming to Nineveh, he explains that it is coming because he is restoring Israel that had been ruined by Assyrian plundering and oppression. But he also reminds his people that he was ultimately the one who had afflicted them because of their sin and refusal to listen to him. So his deliverance of them was all the more merciful, just as is his deliverance of us in Christ from the earthly and eternal consequences of the sin we willingly commit.
