A lengthy genealogy does not strike us as the most compelling way to begin a gospel account. Why not get to the 'good stuff' of Jesus’ birth without a seemingly tedious list of names? But Matthew proves from the outset that the coming of King Jesus is rooted in history and unspeakable in glory. He is the long-awaited Messiah who is not ashamed to be numbered among the transgressors but saves every type of sinner who flees to Him for grace.
