When the Christian life looks like a defeat we should consider the gates of our heavenly city. Jesus describes for us two cities embattled against one another, both with gates. The city of Satan has gates eternally shut because it is a prison, a place of sin and darkness. By contrast, the city of heaven has open gates, standing in confidence and welcoming all who would enter in.
